About
The Affordable Homeownership Bus Tour is a national initiative led by The National Association of Real Estate Brokers to bring real solutions for housing affordability directly to communities across America. Under the leadership of President Ashley Thomas III, the tour brings together housing experts, local leaders, lenders, and real estate professionals to deliver education, resources, and pathways that help individuals and families achieve and sustain homeownership.

The Story
Across the United States, homeownership has long served as one of the most powerful pathways to wealth creation and economic stability. Yet today, rising housing costs, limited inventory, and systemic barriers continue to make homeownership increasingly difficult to attain, particularly for Black households and first-time buyers.
Recognizing the urgency of this moment, the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) is launching the Affordable Homeownership Bus Tour, a multi-city national initiative designed to meet communities where they are and deliver real solutions to the affordability crisis.
Led by National President Ashley Thomas III, this tour is part of NAREB’s national strategy to Close the Gap in Black homeownership. Under President Thomas’s leadership, affordability has been elevated as a central driver of the organization’s work, focusing on removing barriers and expanding pathways to sustainable homeownership.
The tour will travel city to city bringing together local government leaders, housing advocates, lenders, real estate professionals, and community members to engage in meaningful conversations and actionable programming around housing affordability.
More than a series of events, the Affordable Homeownership Bus Tour represents a national call to action that unites public and private sector partners to identify practical solutions that expand access to homeownership.
The Purpose
The Affordable Homeownership Bus Tour was created to address one of the most pressing challenges facing communities today, the growing gap between housing affordability and homeownership opportunity.
The initiative is designed to accomplish four key objectives.
- Deliver Real Education to Communities
Each stop on the tour will feature programming that equips attendees with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate today’s housing market.
- Elevate the Affordability Conversation
The tour will spotlight local housing data and national trends highlighted in NAREB’s State of Housing in Black America (SHIBA) report, helping communities understand the structural challenges impacting affordability.
Through discussions with Elected and Civic leaders, housing officials, lenders, and real estate professionals, the tour will facilitate solutions-focused dialogue around policy, development, and financing strategies that can expand housing access and homeownership for all its citizens.
- Mobilize Industry and Community Partnerships
The Affordable Homeownership Bus Tour is designed to bring together a broad coalition of partners including:
- Local REALTIST® boards
- Financial institutions
- Housing agencies
- Elected and Civic leaders
- Community organizations
- Faith-based organizations and institutions
By convening these stakeholders in each city, the tour aims to create local momentum around collaborative solutions to housing affordability.
- Expand Access to Homeownership
At its core, the tour is about action and access. Attendees will leave with tangible resources, connections to trusted housing professionals, and a clearer pathway toward homeownership.
For many communities, these events will serve as an entry point into programs and resources that can help families move from renters to owners and begin building generational wealth.
Why This Tour Matters
According to NAREB’s research, the Black homeownership rate continues to trail significantly behind the national average. Housing affordability remains one of the largest barriers preventing families from entering the housing market.
The Affordable Homeownership Bus Tour directly responds to this challenge by:
- Bringing housing education directly into communities
- Elevating data-driven conversations about affordability
- Connecting residents to real-time homeownership opportunities
- Building partnerships that support long-term housing solutions
By taking this message on the road, NAREB is demonstrating its commitment to meeting communities where they are and creating tangible pathways to ownership.
